The Telegram Wallet is two products in one app. The default Walt account is custodial: TG Wallet Inc in Panama holds the keys, and bitcoin lives only there. The DeFi Account is self custody with a 24 word phrase, but it holds TON assets, not bitcoin. Which half you are in decides whether anyone can freeze your balance.

2. What does the DeFi Account email backup need besides the code sent to your email?
The security page, updated 8 October 2026, says the code can only be entered from the Telegram account that enabled the backup, and the terms add that losing both the keys and the Telegram account means Backup cannot recover them. Read the section

5. What did ForkLog report about Wallet on 24 August 2024?
ForkLog reported that several thousand users received a phishing message from the official support channel, about ten sent funds, and the team blamed a customer service plugin and promised reimbursement. Read the section
Is the Telegram Wallet custodial or self custody?
Both, and the confusion is not your fault. The product has been renamed often enough to need a family tree. The bot people reach at @wallet is now called Walt. Its self custody tab launched as TON Space, became TON Wallet, and in the help centre rewrite of October 2026 it is DeFi Account. A wallet folded into a bigger app can also simply be switched off, which is what happened to the wallet Opera built into its browsers, retired one platform at a time between January 2025 and January 2026.
The custodial half is plain about what it is. Walt’s user agreement, last updated 29 September 2026, says in section 6.1 that “Walt is a custodial service, meaning we securely hold your private keys”. The service provider is TG Wallet Inc, a Panama company, and the agreement is governed by Panamanian law. The self custody half has its own terms of use, last updated 28 September 2026, which describe DeFi Account as “a self-custody solution supported by TON Space Ltd.” in the Seychelles, and add that it is not a subsidiary or affiliate of Telegram FZ-LLC.
So three companies are involved. Telegram hosts the mini app, a Panama company runs the custodial account, and a Seychelles company runs the self custody one. Walt’s own agreement, section 7.1, calls DeFi Account “an independent third-party service” that Walt “does not operate, manage, or oversee”. The review pages ranking for this query treat it as one Telegram product, which suggests none of them read either set of terms, the one part of a wallet that cannot be lifted from a press release.
Who holds the keys in each half of the app?
This table is compiled from the two sets of terms and the help centre pages, all read on 11 October 2026. Each row says where the claim comes from, so you can check it against the live page rather than against this article.
| Question | Walt account (custodial) | DeFi Account (self custody) |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | TG Wallet Inc, Panama (user agreement, Annex) | TON Space Ltd, Seychelles (terms, 1.1) |
| Who holds the private keys | Walt: “we securely hold your private keys” (6.1) | You: keys “generated locally on your device” and the provider “does not store, retain, or have access” to them (5.1) |
| Identity checks | Yes, documents can be requested for identity and source of funds (5.4) | None described in the help centre; a card sale through a third party needs that provider’s checks |
| Holds bitcoin | Yes, BTC is a supported token (supported tokens) | No. “Only custodial Walt account supports BTC” (Jettons page) |
| Phone lost, Telegram account intact | Log in again on a new phone; Walt says it can help recover the account | Recovery phrase, or the email backup used from the same Telegram account |
| Telegram account lost | No clause covers it; walt.io says support can help | Recovery phrase only. Without it the account is “impossible to recover” (help centre) |
| Can the operator freeze the balance | Yes: “blocking of transactions, or freezing of Virtual Assets” (5.5) | No clause allows it; the terms allow suspending access to the interface (10.2), not to the coins |
| Restricted countries | United States and United Kingdom are both listed in the Annex | Not stated in the terms read for this article |
Read the last three rows together. The custodial half can be frozen, recovered and verified, because somebody else holds the keys. The self custody half can be none of those things, for the same reason. That is not a flaw in either product; it is what the two words mean. The same split runs through the Binance wallet question and the exchange app wallets, and nobody selling either product puts it in one table.

What does the email backup actually depend on?
The DeFi Account has two routes back in, and they are not equal. The terms call the 24 word Recovery Phrase “the primary and most critical access method” in section 5.2(a). The second route is called Backup, defined in Annex I as “a method supported via the email address provided by you and your Telegram account to securely recover access”.
The help centre’s security page, updated 8 October 2026, explains the mechanism. The phrase is encrypted and split, Walt and Telegram each hold one encrypted part, and “Neither company can access your seed phrase.” To put the parts back together, a code is sent to your linked email, and that code can only be entered from the Telegram account that enabled the backup in the first place.
That last condition is the one to write down. The terms state it in section 5.2: if you lose both your private keys and access to your Telegram account or device, Backup will not allow you to recover your private keys. The email backup is a convenience attached to your Telegram account, not an independent second key. The Zengo recovery file is a different design, sitting in your own cloud storage with no interest in which messaging account you log in from.
Before you rely on the DeFi Account email backup
Every item comes from the DeFi Account terms and the help centre, read 11 October 2026. Tick the ones you have actually done.
General information from the vendor’s own pages, not advice. No page should ever ask you to type the phrase, and this one does not.
What happens if you lose your Telegram account?
For the custodial Walt account, the honest answer is that the agreement does not say. There is no clause about losing the Telegram account. Section 4.11 makes you responsible for “independently securing your Telegram account to prevent unauthorised use”, and section 12.3 excludes liability for breaches caused by your own security failures. The walt.io homepage says that if you lose access “we can help you recover your account”, and one Trustpilot reviewer on 14 September 2026 reported exactly that: an old account deleted with funds in it, and the wallet restored to a new one by support. Possible, then, but at the operator’s discretion rather than by right.
For the DeFi Account the answer is written down and it is stark. The Secure Your DeFi Account page, updated 9 October 2026, says there are only two ways in. If you still have the linked Telegram account and email, you can request a recovery code by email. If you do not have the Telegram account, “the only way to recover your DeFi Account is by using its Recovery Phrase” on a new account. With neither, “your DeFi Account will be impossible to recover.” Support “can only reply to your support requests” and will never ask for the phrase.
Telegram accounts are lost in ordinary ways: a phone number given up, a two step password forgotten, a login code handed to a stranger. The recovery phrase is the only thing in this design that survives all three, which is where the recovery phrase article ends up for every wallet that has one.
Does the self custody half hold any bitcoin?
No, and this is the sentence the ranking pages skip. The help centre’s Jettons page, updated 8 October 2026, says it twice: “Only custodial Walt account supports BTC”, and “It is not possible to send BTC from your Walt account to your non-custodial DeFi Account address.” The supported tokens page adds that only TON blockchain tokens can be sent from a Walt account to a non custodial TON address at all.
What the DeFi Account offers instead is cbBTC, which the same page describes as “a token issued by Coinbase and backed by Bitcoin (BTC) at a 1:1 ratio”, reached on TON through an infrastructure layer called TAC. That is a claim on a Coinbase reserve, held in a TON wallet. You hold the key to the claim; Coinbase holds the bitcoin. Self custody of someone else’s promise is a real thing, and it is a perfectly reasonable thing, but it is not what a non custodial bitcoin wallet does, and it is not what the phrase “your own keys” means on the rest of this site.
So the bitcoin inside the Telegram Wallet is always an account balance at a Panama company, and the half with the recovery phrase never touches it. A page that says Telegram Wallet lets you self custody bitcoin has not read the Jettons article.
What do people who use the Telegram Wallet report?
The Trustpilot page for wallet.tg, read on 11 October 2026, showed 269 reviews and a 3.9 score, with 65 per cent at five stars and 26 per cent at one star. The 21 reviews on the first page and one Reddit thread with 16 comments were read for this section. This is testimony, not evidence; it is what people say happened, dated and linked so you can read it yourself.
The one star accounts share a shape. On 2 September 2026 a reviewer described a 53.5 USDT withdrawal held for review well past the 12 hour window the app had quoted, about 560 USDT restricted in total, and a release roughly five hours after they complained publicly and to a consumer authority in Panama; the company replied on 2 October that the review had taken far longer than it should and that a custodial service has required checks. On 23 September a reviewer reported an 888 USDT deposit from a freelance client placed under review past two such windows. On 29 September another said a withdrawal had been pending since 21 April. On 10 October the newest review said a promised 12 hour review had taken three days.
On Reddit, a poster in r/CryptoScams in June 2026 described about 3,000 dollars of settled balance frozen while support asked for a worker and client contract that, as an informal freelancer, they did not have. They offered statements and payment records instead and said their question about an exit route went unanswered. A commenter in the same thread reported about 1,200 dollars frozen and returned after documents. The original poster also wrote that they had assumed Telegram owned the wallet and had only then learned it was a third party company, which is the point of this article in one line.
Against the pattern: the 14 September account of a restored wallet, a 1 October review of a P2P dispute settled once files were sent, and the majority of five star reviews, which praise fast support. Every freeze account read was on the custodial Walt account, the half whose agreement permits freezing in section 5.5. None described a DeFi Account balance frozen by the operator, which fits the terms: there is nothing on that side to freeze. Where the accounts disagree with the vendor is on time. The reviewers describe a 12 hour review promise, which could not be confirmed in the terms, and waits of days to months.

What security incidents and changes should you know about?
On 24 August 2024, ForkLog reported that a phishing message listing attacker addresses was sent from the official Wallet support channel to several thousand users, and that about ten of them sent funds. The team blamed a vulnerability in a customer service plugin, said user funds were not affected, promised full reimbursement, and Telegram briefly marked the channel with a scam label. The lesson is uncomfortable: a message from the official channel was not proof of anything that day.
Two things changed in 2026. On 15 June the TON coin was renamed from Toncoin to Gram, and the welcome page warns that any offer to swap TON for GRAM is a scam, because no action is needed. And the vendor’s own pages disagree about the passcode. The security page, updated 8 October 2026, says the company plans to implement one. The passcode page, updated 9 October, describes a live 4 or 6 digit code that gates withdrawals, swaps and viewing the phrase, reset by a code sent to your email. Take the newer page as current, and take the disagreement as a sign that these pages are being rewritten week by week.
One standing rule from the vendor is worth repeating plainly: support will never message you first and will never ask for your recovery phrase. And since the Walt agreement restricts the United States and the United Kingdom, a good share of the review pages ranking for this product describe something their own readers are not permitted to open.
What does this mean for someone holding bitcoin?
Three facts, with no advice attached. Bitcoin inside the Telegram Wallet is an account balance at TG Wallet Inc, subject to the identity, review and freezing clauses in its agreement. The self custody half is a TON wallet, well documented and genuinely non custodial, that holds a Coinbase token in place of bitcoin. And a bitcoin key that only you hold lives in a bitcoin wallet, which is what the cold wallet guide is about. The chooser below restates which half fits which need, in the vendor’s own terms. It does not ask for a phrase, and no page ever should.
Which half of the Telegram Wallet are you actually in?
Pick the thing you need. Each answer restates who holds the keys, in the vendor’s own terms. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold anything.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Telegram Wallet made by Telegram?
No. The custodial Walt account is provided by TG Wallet Inc in Panama, and the DeFi Account by TON Space Ltd in the Seychelles, whose terms say it is not a subsidiary or affiliate of Telegram FZ-LLC. Telegram hosts the mini app and its account is the login.
Is TON Space the same thing as DeFi Account?
Yes. The self custody tab launched as TON Space in 2023, was renamed TON Wallet, and in October 2026 the help centre calls it DeFi Account. The terms are still served from a URL containing ton-wallet.
Can I send bitcoin from my Walt account to my DeFi Account?
No. The Jettons help page states that only the custodial Walt account supports BTC and that BTC cannot be sent to a DeFi Account address. Only TON blockchain tokens move between the two.
What is cbBTC in the DeFi Account?
A token issued by Coinbase, backed one to one by bitcoin held in reserve by Coinbase, and made available on the TON network through an infrastructure layer called TAC. Holding it means holding a claim on that reserve, not a bitcoin key.
Does the DeFi Account ask for identity verification?
The help centre describes it as non custodial and says no verification is needed to use it. Selling to a bank card from it goes through a third party provider, which the sell page says has its own verification. The custodial Walt account can request identity and source of funds documents under section 5.4 of its agreement.
Is the Telegram Wallet available in the United States?
Not the custodial Walt account. Its user agreement, last updated 29 September 2026, lists the United States and the United Kingdom among restricted jurisdictions in its Annex. The DeFi Account terms read for this article did not state a country list.
