GameStop Wallets: What Happened and Where the Keys Went

An old phone, a sealed envelope and a small home safe on a desk, the leftovers of gamestop wallets.

GameStop wallets were self custodial, so GameStop never held the keys. The iOS app and Chrome extension were removed on 1 November 2023, but the Secret Passphrase still restores the same Ethereum address in another wallet. ETH and tokens left on Loopring’s layer 2 were sent back to that address in July 2026.

A play button sits beside every section heading, and once you scroll past this player a bar at the bottom of the screen keeps the controls in reach. Tap or click any sentence to hear the reading start from there.

On this page: GameStop’s own SEC filings on the wallet it called non custodial, the August 2023 shutdown notice and its dates, Loopring’s 17 July 2026 return of $7,396,559.49 to 31,644 addresses, what Immutable says happened to its side, and a table of where each kind of asset sits today.

Think you already know this? Five questions, one minute.

Every answer is on this page. Answer from what you know now; the page fills in the rest.

  1. 1. How did GameStop describe its own wallet in its filing of 6 September 2023?

  2. 2. On what date were the GameStop iOS app and Chrome extension removed?

  3. 3. According to Loopring’s post of 17 July 2026, what did a holder on its payout list need to do to receive ETH or tokens from layer 2?

  4. 4. After restoring an old GameStop wallet phrase into a wallet you installed yourself, what is the check the article says to make before trusting it?

  5. 5. In the r/loopringorg threads read for this article, which kind of wallet did commenters say was hard to recover after Loopring’s interfaces closed?

Checked on 30 October 2026 against GameStop’s own filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Loopring’s closure posts and Immutable’s documentation. The old address, wallet.gamestop.com, no longer resolves, so GameStop’s notice survives only in the coverage that quoted it. Since this is a bitcoin site: the GameStop wallet never held bitcoin. It is here because it is the cleanest recent case of a company walking away from a wallet, and the story did not end in 2023.

What was the GameStop wallet and who held the keys?

A browser extension and an iPhone app for Ethereum, launched in May 2022 to go with an NFT marketplace. GameStop’s quarterly report for the period to 30 April 2022 says the company announced the wallet in May 2022 “to allow gamers and others to store, send, receive and use cryptocurrencies” and NFTs. Web3 gaming was going to change everything that year. It mostly changed how many browser extensions people had installed.

The phrase that matters is in the report filed on 6 September 2023: a “non custodial digital asset wallet”. GameStop generated your Secret Passphrase on your device and never had a copy. That is why the shutdown was survivable, and it is also why nobody at GameStop could help anyone who lost the phrase. Self custody cuts both ways, which is the whole argument of how people actually lose a recovery phrase.

Under the hood the wallet used two layer 2 networks on top of Ethereum: Loopring for cheap transfers, and Immutable X for some of the marketplace’s collections. Those two networks are where most of the confusion lives today.

When did GameStop shut its wallet down, and what did it say?

In August 2023. The notice, as Blockworks quoted it, said the iOS and Chrome extension wallets would be removed on 1 November 2023 because of the “regulatory uncertainty of the crypto space”, and asked every customer to make sure they had their Secret Passphrase by 1 October 2023. It added one sentence that still carries the whole recovery: any customer with that passphrase could recover their account “in any compatible wallet”.

The NFT marketplace followed. The Block reported on 13 January 2024 that it would stop on 2 February 2024, and that buying, selling and creating NFTs on it would end that day while the NFTs themselves stayed on chain. GameStop’s annual report for fiscal 2023 closes the book: “In the fourth quarter of 2023 we began the process of winding down our digital asset wallet and NFT marketplace.”

Where did the coins and NFTs in a GameStop wallet end up?

It depends on which layer they were sitting on, and this is the part every 2023 guide is now wrong about, because they were written before the networks underneath moved.

Anything on Ethereum itself never moved. It sits at your address and the passphrase controls it, exactly as it did in 2022.

Anything on Loopring’s layer 2 has been pushed back to Ethereum for you. Loopring ended its exchange on 28 June 2026, and its post on X of 17 July 2026 says all 142 distribution batches executed, delivering $7,396,559.49 at snapshot prices to 31,644 addresses across 73 tokens, ETH plus 72 ERC20 tokens. Its words for anyone on the payout list: “No claim, no signature, no gas.” The tokens land at the layer 1 address that owned the layer 2 account, which for a GameStop wallet is the address your passphrase opens. Loopring also says 26 recipients, worth $1,818.28 in total, were not paid, mostly smart contract addresses that refuse plain ETH transfers. A GameStop wallet was an ordinary address, not one of those.

NFTs on Loopring are the open question. That July post covers ETH and ERC20 tokens only, and we could not find a Loopring statement, dated or otherwise, on what happened to layer 2 NFTs. If yours were there, treat their status as unconfirmed.

Anything on Immutable X moved too. Immutable’s deprecation notice says X was merged into Immutable Chain in early 2026, that ETH, IMX and other ERC20 balances were migrated “directly to Immutable Chain” and are available in the same wallet, and that most NFTs were migrated automatically, with some collections handled by their own projects. It also says Immutable had no access to private keys during the move.

How do you restore a GameStop wallet phrase safely?

Into a wallet you install yourself, from its developer’s own site or the official app store, and nowhere else. Never into a web page. Never into a form that a helpful stranger sent you. Never into a “wallet validator” or a “claim portal”, because Loopring has said in writing that no claim exists.

Hands holding a pen over a blank card, ready to back up a phrase from gamestop wallets.
A phrase written on paper, never typed into a web page, is the restore that ends well.

People who did this report that the passphrase imports into MetaMask and opens the same address, which is what a standard Ethereum phrase does. We could not confirm the word count or the derivation path against a GameStop document, because none survives online. So the check that matters is simple: before you trust the restore, compare the address it shows with the one in your old GameStop wallet history, an old email or a block explorer. If they match, you are in. If they do not, stop and work out why before you send anything. Our guide to what a MetaMask seed phrase will and will not restore covers the import itself.

Then look at the address on Etherscan. Loopring’s July return arrived as ordinary transfers from its distributor contract, and a reply in the r/loopringorg thread about it points out that ETH returns show up under internal transactions rather than the main list, which is why some people looked and saw nothing.

Last, think about whether the old phrase should stay in use at all. It spent its life in a browser extension, and an exported phrase may have been typed, photographed or pasted along the way. The cautious order is restore, confirm, then move everything to a fresh wallet with a new phrase that has never touched a browser, which is the honest case for cold storage.

Restoring an old GameStop wallet phrase, safely

Tick each step as you go. Nothing here asks for your phrase, and nothing should.

Loopring says its return needed no claim, no signature and no gas. Anyone asking for one is not Loopring.

What do people who moved out of a GameStop wallet report?

We read 48 comments across three r/loopringorg threads, posted between March and October 2026, plus the exit guide Enkrypt published on 8 August 2023. This is testimony about a process, not evidence about your wallet.

In March 2026 a commenter whose coins had all been on Loopring’s layer 2 inside a GameStop wallet described the route that worked: restore the phrase into MetaMask, open Loopring’s web app with that wallet, withdraw from layer 2 to layer 1, and send a small test first. In the same thread another commenter drew the line that turned out to matter: an ordinary phrase based wallet can be loaded anywhere, while Loopring’s own smart wallet needed a working interface that no longer existed. A third warned people not to answer direct messages offering help.

Compare the restored address with your old one before trusting it.

By July 2026 the manual withdrawal was moot. A reply in the thread on Loopring’s completion post summed it up for ordinary wallets as funds already back on layer 1, free, with nothing to do. Smart wallet owners, by contrast, had to email Loopring to prove ownership by 15 August 2026.

The one account that cuts the other way is a warning. In a post from 26 September 2026, the owner of an old Loopring smart wallet reported that after a recovery they believed was run with Loopring staff, the remaining 0.102 ETH or so on layer 1 went to an address they did not control. Replies insisted nobody works at Loopring any more and called it a scam. We cannot settle that from a thread, and it was a smart wallet, not a GameStop wallet. But it is exactly the shape of trouble a dead project attracts.

The pattern across all of it agrees with the official line: phrase based wallets were never really at risk from the shutdowns. The losses people describe come from lost phrases and from helpers, not from GameStop or Loopring switching off.

What should you avoid now that GameStop and Loopring are gone?

Anyone offering to recover, claim, unlock or migrate a GameStop or Loopring balance for you. Loopring’s own wording is that payouts needed no claim and no signature, so a site asking you to connect a wallet and sign something to receive one is not Loopring. A site asking for your phrase is not anybody honest. This is the same vacuum we described after Samourai Wallet was seized and when Opera pulled its wallet: a dead project’s name becomes bait.

Also avoid old guides that tell you to withdraw through Loopring’s app. The relayer went offline when the exchange shut on 28 June 2026, and Loopring’s own phone wallet had already closed on 30 June 2025. Those steps now lead to dead pages, which is where copycat sites live.

And keep the lesson that outlasts the brand. GameStop chose a non custodial design, gave three months of notice, and told people to secure their phrase. That is about as well as a wallet shutdown goes, and the people who were hurt were still the ones without the phrase. Whatever hot wallet you use next, the backup is the product.

Frequently asked questions

Did GameStop ever hold my crypto or my keys?

No. GameStop’s own filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission describe the product as a non custodial digital asset wallet. The Secret Passphrase was generated on your device, so GameStop never had a copy and could not move your funds, freeze them or recover them for you.

I never exported my Secret Passphrase. Is there anything left to try?

Only the device. If the old phone or the browser profile with the extension still exists, keep it switched off the internet and look for any backup you made at setup. Without the phrase or a working copy of the wallet there is no route back, because there was never a server holding a copy. Nobody can recover it for you, whatever they claim.

Do I need to claim the Loopring return or pay gas?

No. Loopring’s post of 17 July 2026 says payouts went straight to layer 1 addresses with no claim, no signature and no gas. If you were on its list, the tokens are already at your address. A site asking you to sign or pay to receive them is not Loopring.

Why can I not see the returned ETH on my address?

ETH sent by a contract appears in a block explorer under internal transactions, not the main transaction list, and some wallets do not show tokens they do not already track. Check the address on Etherscan first. Small balances may also never have been on the payout list.

Can I still use the GameStop wallet app if it is still on my phone?

Do not rely on it. GameStop removed the app and the extension on 1 November 2023 and its services stopped behind them. Use it, at most, to export the phrase if you never did, then restore that phrase into a wallet you installed from the developer’s own source.

Did the GameStop wallet ever hold bitcoin?

No. It was an Ethereum wallet working with the Loopring and Immutable X layer 2 networks. Bitcoin held in a self custody wallet follows the same rule, though: the phrase is the wallet, and the app is only a window onto it.
