The question that costs people money comes later, on a new laptop, when the phrase goes in and an account they used for years does not come out.

Where do you find your MetaMask seed phrase?

MetaMask’s guide to revealing your Secret Recovery Phrase gives two routes in the browser extension. The first is the menu, then Settings, then Security and password, then Manage wallet recovery, where you pick the phrase and press Reveal. The second runs through the account list: the three dots beside an account, then Account details, then Secret Recovery Phrase. That route asks two short questions about self custody, then your password, then a button you have to hold down.

On the phone app the path is the menu, then Settings, then Security and privacy, then Reveal Secret Recovery Phrase. You enter the password and hold the button. MetaMask’s own warning on that screen is blunt: “DO NOT share this phrase with anyone!” It also says the phrase cannot be edited or changed, and that MetaMask cannot retrieve it if it is lost.

Do this somewhere nobody can see the screen, and write the words on paper or steel, not into a notes app or a screenshot. The phrase is the whole wallet. Anyone who reads it can take everything it controls.

Reveal the phrase where nobody can see the screen, and write it on paper or steel, never in a screenshot.

What does the MetaMask seed phrase restore, and what does it leave out?

Here is the part the reveal guides skip. MetaMask now holds several kinds of account side by side in one list, and they look identical. They are not backed up the same way. Since its May 2025 update on multiple Secret Recovery Phrases, one MetaMask can hold more than one phrase, and MetaMask states that “each SRP still remains isolated from the other.” Isolated means one phrase knows nothing about the others.

Account in your list

Back from the main 12 words?

What you need instead

Source

Account 1, 2, 3 and so on, created by MetaMask

Yes, in order

Nothing more

MetaMask, missing accounts

The bitcoin and Solana addresses on those accounts

Yes

Nothing more, Native SegWit only for bitcoin

MetaMask, Bitcoin

Account imported with a private key or JSON file

No

That key or file, imported again

MetaMask, imported accounts

Ledger, Trezor or other hardware wallet account

No

The device and its own phrase

MetaMask, missing accounts

Accounts under a second phrase you added

No

That second phrase

MetaMask, multiple SRPs

Wallet created with Google, Apple or Telegram

Not needed day to day

The social login plus your MetaMask password

MetaMask, access without SRP

The first row hides a catch. MetaMask’s page on missing accounts, read on 16 October 2026, says automatic restoring of Account 2 onward applies when Backup and sync was switched on, and that it also adds accounts holding a non zero ETH balance. Older versions of the same guidance described a scan that stopped at the first empty account. Either way, the fix is the same: add accounts one at a time, in order, until you reach the one you are missing. Account 4 before the restore is Account 4 after it, because the addresses come from the phrase and never change.

If you signed up with Google, Apple or Telegram, MetaMask says you can still reveal the phrase and save it as a fallback. Lose the MetaMask password while logged out, though, and the social account alone will not get you back in. Hardware wallet accounts are outside that restore too. If yours is a Ledger, why its seed is 24 words and what it cannot stop covers the other half of the backup.

Which of your MetaMask accounts do the 12 words cover?

Tick every kind of account you see in your MetaMask list. In late 2021 MetaMask hired Least Authority to audit the extension’s seed phrase code after users reported that the same phrase could produce different account lists. The final report, dated 29 July 2022, is careful and slightly unnerving.

In plain words: the auditors found that MetaMask creates a phrase the moment you set a password during setup, before it shows you anything. If you quit at that point, that unseen phrase can already sit in memory and be written to disk. Combined with a storage file that survives uninstalling, that could leave someone holding a phrase they never saw. One researcher believed they watched it happen once and could not repeat it. The report says plainly that the root cause was not identified.

The BIP 39 code that turns words into keys was found to follow industry standards. MetaMask’s response to the eleven suggestions was mixed:

Least Authority suggestion

Status in the 29 July 2022 report

Separate phrase creation from adding accounts

Resolved

Validate every generated phrase

Resolved

Fix the check that let users run setup twice

Resolved

Build a tool to recover lost phrases from old files

Unresolved, MetaMask said the cost outweighed the benefit

Only create the phrase when the user asks for it

Unresolved, MetaMask called the scenario highly unlikely

Stop users skipping the phrase confirmation step

Unresolved, MetaMask called this intentional design

The practical lesson: finish setup in one sitting, and confirm the phrase when MetaMask asks rather than choosing later. Then do one test restore while the wallet is still small. If the addresses that come back match the ones you have been using, your written phrase is the right one.

Does a MetaMask seed phrase cover your bitcoin?

Yes, with one condition worth knowing before you move coins in. MetaMask’s Bitcoin support page says a bitcoin account “follows the Native SegWit derivation path by default,” and that you can only send and receive from Native SegWit addresses for now. Those addresses start bc1q. The same 12 words bring them back along with the Ethereum accounts.

The catch runs the other way. If you type a phrase from another bitcoin wallet into MetaMask, coins that wallet kept on Taproot or older address types will not show up, because MetaMask is not looking there yet. They are not gone. They are simply on paths MetaMask says it will support “in the future.” Restore that phrase in the wallet that made it instead. The reverse case is kinder: an Ethereum phrase from a wallet that has since shut usually lands where it should, which is the route people report for the old GameStop wallets and the layer 2 funds Loopring sent back to them.

Bitcoin held on a hardware wallet comes back from the device’s own phrase, not from the MetaMask 12 words.

What do people restoring MetaMask actually report?

We read four threads on r/Metamask posted between January and October 2026, chosen because each described a specific restore problem. These are what people report, not findings, and three are summarised here.

In an August 2026 thread, a user found an old phrase after four years, restored it, and saw none of the accounts they expected. A commenter traced their returned funds to BNB Chain rather than Ethereum. Another suggested importing the old public address. That cannot work: an import needs a private key or JSON file, and a public address gives no control at all. Network and account number explain most of these cases.

In a January 2026 thread, a user on a new phone said neither phrase nor password worked. The reply pointed out that the password belongs to one install, and that every word must match the BIP 39 English word list with single spaces between. The poster reported it working within minutes.

In a March 2026 thread, someone who signed up with Google asked whether they needed the phrase at all. Two replies disagreed flatly. One said yes, always; the other said the Google login plus the password is enough, and that losing the password means losing access. MetaMask’s documentation sides with the second, and adds that the phrase can still be revealed as a fallback, which is the sensible move.

The pattern agrees with MetaMask’s own page on restoring the wrong accounts: a different phrase, an account that was imported rather than created, or a word typed wrongly. None of the four threads showed a correct phrase failing on its own.

Who will ask for your MetaMask seed phrase, and how do you tell?

Apart from MetaMask’s own restore screen, only scammers. On 5 January 2026 Techloy reported a campaign flagged by SlowMist that copied a two factor security check on lookalike domains, complete with countdown timers, and ended by asking for the 12 words to finish “security setup.” MetaMask has no such step. Its support page on suspicious emails says it does not start email conversations you did not ask for.

The rule is short. The phrase is typed in one place only: a wallet’s own restore screen, on a device you trust. Not a support chat, not a “wallet validator,” not a form that promises to fix an invalid phrase, and not a giveaway, however enthusiastic the influencer. If you have already typed it into one, treat every account under that phrase as exposed and move the funds to a new wallet from a clean device.

For the ways phrases go missing in real life, see how people actually lose a recovery phrase. For MetaMask itself, why it works as an app connector rather than a vault explains why a hardware wallet belongs behind it. Coinbase users can check which Coinbase product actually has a seed phrase, and how hot wallets actually get drained puts the rest in context.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MetaMask seed phrase the same as the Secret Recovery Phrase?

Yes.
